Welcome to my January monthly income and downloads report! It’s quite a bit late – but better late than never!
Each month I share a detailed report of how many downloads my apps have gotten in the past month as well as how much money I’ve earned from them – to the penny. No matter if it’s been an awesome month or a terrible month, you’re going to find out right here in these reports.
I’m doing this not only to be as honest and transparent as possible, but also to hold myself accountable and motivate myself to keep improving my income. These reports may not be jaw-dropping (at least at first), but hopefully you’ll get a good feel of what it’s really like to be an independent app developer. No hype, no gimmicks – just the facts.
Hopefully as time goes on though, these income reports will gradually keep growing and you’ll be able to follow along on my journey to become the next mobile app tycoon!
Happenings in January
SharePrayer Dispute Officially Over
If you read my past few income reports, you’ll know that it’s been a bit of a hassle (to say the least) to get the developer who made SharePrayer to finish his work and remove the bugs from the app and get the ads working on the free version.
He finally complied and finished the project. The last thing I needed was the source code so I could have other developers fix bugs in the app and if necessary add new features. This month he sent over the source code files so now I can breathe a bit easier.
Out Sick
For a good two weeks this month I was out of commission with the flu. Needless to say, I didn’t get much done on my businesses during that time.
Pizzeria Case Study Fails…Or Does It?
During this month, the little work I did get done on my app business was working on my case study of selling mobile app development services to pizzeria owners. As you can read about here, this didn’t work out as expected and I finally called it quits. However, just a couple days after I published the post announcing that I was ending the case study, I got a call from a pizzeria owner who said he was interest. I am setting up a time to talk to him about the details of the project over the phone and we’ll see where it takes us. I’m not sure yet whether I’ll re-open the case study or not if this works out, but we’ll see what happens and make that decision when and if it happens.

Things I Learned in January
January was another disappointing month for my app business. Then again, it’s unrealistic to expect my income to magically increase when this month I didn’t make too much progress. So the main thing that I learned this month is that if I want to seriously increase my app income, I need to put the time in and take action. Granted I was sick for a good portion of the month, I can still make better use of the time I wasn’t to get better results.
I’m tired of seeing ridiculously low income results at the end of each month, so it’s just a matter of taking action to fix that. While I only have half of February left before my next income report, I’m determined to make some major progress in my app business in the hopes that it will pay off in the long term. As Pat Flynn would say – it’s all about working hard NOW to reap the benefits later!

5 SIMPLE methods for generating app ideas!

Just keep working hard! You might not realize it now but even though you’re not making much to start out, you’re learning a ton of things that you’ll be able to use in the future that will make you money. It’s not about getting rich quickly, it’s about continuously taking action. Don’t let the small sales discourage you at all.
Thanks for the support Brent! You make a great point – at this stage it’s more about failing fast and LEARNING from my failures so that I can eventually be successful in this business. There’s no silver bullet to success – just hard work.
Congrats on resolving the dispute with the developer, that seemed to have been dragging on forever!
Still, why no income from the free version on the iPhone? I thought you said the ads were fixed a couple of months ago?
Yeah that was a hassle, and I’m glad it’s over! As far as I can tell, the ads are working on both the iOS and Android version of SharePrayer. Unfortunately though neither has made any money over the past couple months they’ve been working. You would think I would have at least one click by now, but after seeing the results of MadLibs Word Generator which with around 1,100 active users only making around $1.50/month in ads it makes sense that SharePrayer with only 200-300 active users (on both iOS and Android) wouldn’t make anything. If after a couple more months I still haven’t gotten one click, I’ll take a closer look to see if there is anything still wrong…
That makes sense about small user base.
On a completely random note – I was reading through your site on my phone yesterday and noticed you do not have a mobile theme. I went for a year and a half without it on my site and just found a simple WordPress plugin that transforms it beautifully when viewed on the iPhone (don’t have an iPad to try it). It is called WPtouch. Took a few minutes to configure the menus, but otherwise is pretty simple.
Thanks for the tip – I’ll definitely have to play around with WPtouch and see how it goes!
You’re doing fine. At least you’re taking action, taking risks, trying things to see what will work. You’ll get it all to come together in the near future. I know it!
Thanks Benny!
