My dad is a big fan of the Late Show with David Letterman and watches it pretty much every night. So naturally, I end up watching it pretty often as well and by far my favorite part is always the top 10 lists. So today I wanted to make up my own top 10 list, not of funny comments or statements, but of some amazing statistics that I’ve come across that have to do with mobile apps or smartphones. Many of these statistics really will make your jaw drop. Some of them on the other hand may need some time to sink in before you are able to fully comprehend the magnitude of the numbers.
Please note that while I have done my best to verify that all of these statistics are true, I can’t vouch for them 100%. I have found these stats from various websites while browsing or doing research and I will provide a link to the website I found each stat. While the place where I found it may not be the original source, hopefully if you are really interested in the statistic it will help lead you to the original source.
So without further delay, let’s see the top 10 most AMAZING statistics about mobile apps and smartphones!
10. In the U.S. alone, there were more than 400 different smartphone devices on the market at the end of 2011.
While this statistic is only sitting at the number 10 slot, it is still pretty amazing to think about! With Apple’s iPhone and a few of the best-selling Android devices taking up the large majority of the market share, it is hard to believe that there are 400 smartphone devices out there for sale. How many of them can you name? (source)
9. 49% of people confess to being addicted to their mobile phones.
This statistic is pretty cool in that it backs up our claims when we joke around with other people and tell them they are addicted to their phone. Well, it turns out that it’s probably true! Quite frankly, with me being a teenager in high school and seeing all the kids on their phones constantly, I’m a little surprised this statistic isn’t higher. However, I suppose many adults who simply have a mobile phone to stay in contact with kids and other family members even it out. Keep in mind though, that this statistic is only the percent of people that admit it!

8. On average, every minute 250,000 pieces of fruit are sliced in “Fruit Ninja”.
What I would really like to know is what date this statistic is from and how high on the list of the top selling apps Fruit Ninja was at the time. Regardless, this is quite a cool statistic and I know that every so often I am definitely contributing to this total.
Fruit Ninja is a great mobile app success story that I am hoping to eventually cover in more detail in a future post! (source)
7. On average, every minute 23,148 mobile apps are downloaded.
This is one of those statistics where it is hard to comprehend the magnitude of the number. By the time you have finished reading this post, it is likely that over 100,000 apps have been downloaded. If you divide this statistic by sixty seconds per minute, it comes out to about 386 apps downloaded per second. BOOM! Another 386 just downloaded! As impressive as you may think this stat is though, this is only the number of mobile apps downloaded per minute on the average day – wait until you see what happens when a popular day for app sales comes along! (source)
6. There were 242 million apps downloaded on Christmas Day in 2011.
Christmas Day is the one of the biggest (if not the biggest) day for app sales and smartphone sales because everyone procrastinates on buying gifts until the last possible minute! As a side note, another one of the most popular days for app downloads is Father’s Day due to the amount of phones given as gifts as well. If you do the math for this statistic, it comes out to around 2,800 apps downloaded per second! Kind of makes the number of apps downloaded per second on the average day (386) look small, huh? (source)
5. It takes 26 hours for the average person to report a lost wallet. However, it takes only 68 minutes on average for them to report a lost phone.
One thing that I can think of that makes this statistic a little more logical is that people may not know for sure whether their wallet is really “lost” or if they just misplaced it around their house. However, for a phone, you can just call it and know if it is in the immediate area or not by listening for your ringtone. Still, this is amazing to think that people care more about their phone than their wallet! I guess they must have spent all the money in their wallet on apps!

4. There are 6.8 billion people on the planet. 5.1 billion of them own a cell phone, but only 4.2 billion own a toothbrush.
A disgusting, but apparently true stat! How are you able to afford a cell phone but not be able to grab a toothbrush from the dollar store? Sure, mobile phones can do a lot of things, but I don’t think doubling as a toothbrush is one of them!

3. On average, Google’s Android OS is now seeing 850,000 new smartphone activations per day.
This is an amazing statistic that really shows you how popular smartphones are becoming. Remember, this is only for Android devices. Apple’s iOS devices aren’t even included in this stat! As popular as iOS devices are though, Android devices are gaining new users and market share faster than iOS devices. (source)
2. The number of smartphone shipments is expected to be almost 1 billion in 2015.
Yes, you read that right. Billion with a “B”. That means that if you look at the previous statistic, the amount of Android activations per day will be at least double if not closer to triple in 2015! This statistic really proves that smartphones aren’t a fad and aren’t going anywhere any time soon. (source)
1. It is projected that mobile apps will grow from a $6 billion industry today to a $55.7 billion industry by 2015.
This statistic is just jaw dropping! You just read all these statistics about how popular smartphones and mobile apps are and yet if you look at today’s amount vs. the projected amount for just 3 short years from now today’s statistics look like nothing! As an app developer (or a future app developer) this statistic should put a huge smile on your face! Many people are saying that we have reached the peak of the mobile app industry. This statistic is a big slap in the face to anyone who says that! Let’s hope it ends up being correct! (source)
There you have it! The top 10 most AMAZING statistics about mobile apps and smartphones! And these are only the statistics that I have found from browsing the web and doing a little bit of research – there are probably many more amazing ones out there as well! So, if you have any that I missed here that you think are amazing, let me know in the comment section below! I love reading amazing statistics and these statistics are inspiring me to get my first app finished and for sale soon! I hope they do the same for you!
