One thing that I’ve always had a problem with since I’ve started considering myself an entrepreneur is “spreading myself too thin.” Also known as the “entrepreneur’s curse”, I have an extremely hard time stopping myself from implementing every single one of the hundreds of business ideas I’ve had over the years. And from what I’ve heard from many other entrepreneurs, I’m not alone!
What I now have to do in order to stop myself from pursuing every idea is create a detailed list of pros and cons of starting the business and also look at the potential risk vs reward of starting it. So when I decided a while ago that it would be cool to try and make some mobile apps, I made sure I knew exactly why I wanted to get into this business.
There are quite a few reasons, so let’s get right into it!
Ability to Create Passive Income
As an entrepreneur, the last thing that I want to do is trade my time for money. This is why I’ve always been fascinated with the idea of making passive income. I have to thank Pat Flynn from SmartPassiveIncome.com for exposing me to this! As Pat likes to put it, passive income is “working hard now to continually reap the benefits later.” I LOVE that definition and it’s something that motivates me to continue pursuing entrepreneurship every day. Pat doesn’t just talk the talk though, he made over $340,000 last year from various internet marketing ventures including $52,000 from iPhone apps!
I am definitely inspired by Pat’s success and I am hoping that in the near future I will be able to reach his level of success with the income from my future apps!
I know the power of passive income and I know that apps are a great way to create it. Additionally, passive income will be especially important to me since I am 16 and currently in high school. As many of my friends who are now getting part-time jobs are finding out, working for minimum wage doing something you hate sucks. I’m hoping that I will be able to create at least enough passive income from apps and my other businesses that I will be able to go through high school and college without ever having a “real” job to get some extra spending money. Being a poor college kid is not appealing to me and neither is being bored out of my mind at some fast food job. So instead of just starting to do these crappy jobs early like many of my peers, I am working hard on my businesses now so that I will be able to live comfortably throughout and after college.
Ability to Be Creative
I consider myself to be a highly creative person both in the business world and outside of it. I love finding creative solutions to problems and I believe that through creating mobile apps I will be able to do just that. I think one of the best ways for me to express my creativity will be to eventually create a mobile game app. As all of you who have played some of the top iPhone and Android games will know, it takes some creativity to come up with a great game idea for a game. Before Angry Birds was released, who would have thought that they would waste hours upon hours using a sling shot to shoot birds at pigs? Nobody! But, the developers at Rovio were creative enough to think of that and because of their creativity and hard work they are now making millions.
College Applications
Just like everyone should, I think about the future all the time and plan ahead in order to give myself the best chance to succeed. Since I am at the end of my sophomore year of high school, I have to think in advance about what I’m going to put on my college applications. Due to spending so much time on my businesses, my grades aren’t as spectacular as what my teachers and parents wish they would be. However, since I want to major in Marketing, I definitely think that all my business experience will help me stand out from the crowd of “all ‘A’ students” who are applying. And, the more successful I am and the more money I make, I feel the better my chances are of getting into the school I want. So while this may not be a reason for most of you to get into the business of making mobile apps, it definitely is a personal reason for me.
Ability to Easily Outsource
Another factor that makes creating mobile apps appealing is that you can easily outsource the majority of the work to freelance developers. Last year I took an Intro to Computer Science course in school where you learn the basics of coding a computer application with Visual Basic. While I don’t think I can remember how to make even a simple computer application anymore, what I did learn from that class is that I definitely do NOT have the patience to sit down and stare at code for hours. So the fact that I can easily find developers willing to do that for me at a reasonable cost is very attractive to me. It leaves the technical stuff to the professionals and lets me do what I do best – marketing.
Selfishness
I know that when thinking of ideas for mobile apps, I need to make sure that there is demand for the app I would be making. However, I also want to make apps that I would personally use. I want to be my own customer. I know that this won’t be the case with every app I make because I am not always interested in what the rest of the world is, but I would like most of my apps to be ones that I would personally use as well. I also think that by doing this, it will help me create better apps for other users as well. So maybe I’m not that selfish after all!
Opportunity to Make LOTS of Money
The fact that there is BIG money to be made in the mobile app market is one that is well known. Many people have heard the success stories of apps like Angry Birds, Instagram, and even the app iFart. Don’t get me wrong – I do know that the chances of having app as successful as any of those is slim. However, this doesn’t stop me from being insanely inspired and want to try!
Also, the great thing about making mobile apps is that it is a scalable business model. What that means is that since your app will be distributed in places like Apple’s App Store or Android’s App Market, those companies are providing you essentially with a “storefront” for your product. And, your “store” is open 24/7 and is FILLED with people. Since Apple and Android (and other mobile app platforms) give this to you already, all that’s left for you to do is come up with a product that those millions of people in your “store” want and convince them to download it.
It’s Fun
Although I have’t finished my first mobile app yet, I am currently in the process of doing so. And what I’ve noticed throughout the process of creating it, is that it is really fun to be able to see your idea turn into an actual app! And I’m sure it will be a lot more fun when I actually start to see sales!
What About You?
I hope you now see why I am getting into the business of making mobile apps. I hope that these reasons inspire you and that if you are interested in creating mobile apps you will now have the motivation to actually get started! However, while I think I have some great reasons to make apps listed above, I’m sure I didn’t mention all of the great reasons there are! Everyone is different and everyone has different goals – so if you are interested in making mobile apps (or are currently making mobile apps) I would love for you to leave a comment below about why you want to (or already are) creating apps!
